Three pillars. At the foundation lie three types: ninjutsu (chakra techniques that affect the world), genjutsu (illusions that affect the mind), and taijutsu (hand-to-hand combat of the body). Everything else is their special branches.
Three basics: ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu
The three basic types of techniques differ mainly in: what chakra is directed at and whether it is needed at all. This is the answer to the eternal question of how they differ from each other.

The easiest way to remember it is: ninjutsu changes the world around you, genjutsu changes what the victim sees in their head, and taijutsu is the pure power of the fist and speed. That is why a fighter who is strong in one is often helpless against another: a ninjutsu master may not notice how they fell into an illusion, and a taijutsu genius may not have a single long-range technique.
Ninjutsu — chakra techniques
Ninjutsu is the most extensive family and what people most often imagine when thinking of ninja. It includes everything where chakra is transformed into an effect: fireballs, water dragons, shadow clones, summoning toads and snakes. The basis of most ninjutsu is the nature of chakra, that is, the five basic elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Lightning, which can be combined into rare combinations.
Genjutsu — the art of illusions
Genjutsu does not deal direct damage — it deceives the senses. A master pours chakra into the victim's stream of consciousness and makes them see, hear, and feel things that are not there. The strongest illusionists wield this through their eyes: it was the Sharingan that made Itachi Uchiha an unrivaled master of genjutsu. One can escape by disrupting their own chakra flow — but not everyone manages to notice they are already in an illusion.
Taijutsu — body strength
Taijutsu requires almost no chakra — it is refined hand-to-hand combat, speed, and physical power. Its path is chosen by those who cannot master other techniques: Might Guy and Rock Lee have brought taijutsu to a level where they can defeat ninjutsu masters with their bare fists. The pinnacle of this path is the Eight Inner Gates, which remove all limitations from the body at the cost of terrible backlash.
Special categories of techniques
Besides the three basics, there are narrow but formidable families — often they decide the outcome of great battles.
Dojutsu — eye techniques. Hereditary abilities like Sharingan, Byakugan, and Rinnegan give their owner what is inaccessible to an ordinary shinobi.

Senjutsu — use of natural energy. It is what grants Sage Mode, which greatly enhances all of a fighter's techniques.
Fuinjutsu — the art of seals, the specialty of the Uzumaki clan: you can seal chakra, a technique, or even a tailed beast.
Medical ninjutsu — healing techniques requiring perfect chakra control; their pinnacle — Tsunade and her student Sakura.
Technique ranks: from D to S
All jutsu are divided by complexity and power into ranks — from D (simplest, for genin) to S (unique techniques of Kage level and forbidden arts). The higher the rank, the more chakra and skill are required, and the more dangerous the consequences of a mistake. It is the S-rank techniques that usually become the hallmark of the strongest shinobi.
