Description

Rinnegan is the most revered of the Three Great Dōjutsu and the strongest dōjutsu overall. According to legend, in turbulent times the possessor of these eyes descends from the heavens as a God of Creation, granting peace, or as a God of Destruction, turning everything into nothingness. Externally, the Rinnegan is characterized by concentric circles spreading across the eyeball.

The first on Earth to wield this dōjutsu was Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, known as the Sage of Six Paths. He used the Rinnegan's power to save the world from the Ten-Tails, and created ninshū - the precursor of modern ninjutsu, for which his eyes and he himself were revered as a myth even centuries after his death. Awakening the Rinnegan is possible for a Sharingan wielder through obtaining Hagoromo's chakra. One path - merging the chakra of his sons, Indra and Ashura, as Madara Uchiha did by implanting Hashirama Senju's flesh into his body. However, the eyes turned into Rinnegan only decades later, already at the twilight of his life, and simultaneously restored the eyesight lost due to Izanagi. The second path - directly receiving chakra from Hagoromo's spirit, as with Sasuke Uchiha, whose left eye became a Rinnegan with six tomoe and retained the abilities of the Mangekyō Sharingan, including Amaterasu. With excessive use, the tomoe temporarily disappear, weakening the eye and blocking the Mangekyō of the second eye along with Susanoo. Transplantation of the Rinnegan is possible: Madara, while still alive, secretly implanted both eyes into the young Nagato, who, with his Uzumaki lineage, managed to fully unlock their power. After Nagato's death, Obito Uchiha took the left eye, realizing that the power of two eyes was too much for him.

The Rinnegan is endowed with colossal chakra and visual power, allowing one to see its flows and invisible barriers, as well as easily master any techniques and all five basic nature transformations. Only this eye can fully read the Sage's stone tablet. The key ability is the Six Paths Technique, granting six different powers: the Deva Path controls attraction and repulsion; the Asura Path mechanically alters the body; the Human Path extracts souls; the Animal Path summons various creatures; the Preta Path absorbs chakra; the Naraka Path grants access to the King of Hell. The seventh, the Outer Path, rules over life and death, allowing resurrection of the dead, as well as creating black receivers for remote chakra transmission and controlling the Six Paths of Pain - six bodies, each of which uses one facet of the Six Paths Technique and shares the field of vision with each other, with summoned animals, and the King of Hell.

The Rinnegan can summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, tearing the seal from it, and seal the Ten-Tails inside the body, becoming its jinchūriki. The eye's owner can awaken the Rinne Sharingan and initiate the Infinite Tsukuyomi; another wielder, on the contrary, can reflect this light, sheltering allies as well using Susanoo. Among the unique techniques of individual owners - Sasuke's Amenotejikara, allowing instant teleportation swapping places with a target or object, and Madara's ability to create invisible bodily shadows in Limbo, distinguishable only to the Rinnegan and vulnerable only to Six Paths chakra.
