Genjutsu is the most insidious weapon of the shinobi world. It does not break bones or burn flesh: it deceives the mind. One caught in an illusion can lose a fight without a single scratch — simply because they saw something completely different from what was actually happening. It is one of the three basic types of techniques, and the most subtle of them.
Briefly. Genjutsu — illusion techniques. The master infuses his chakra into the victim's consciousness and takes control of their senses, forcing them to see, hear and feel what is not there. Death is inflicted not by the body, but by deception.
What is genjutsu
Unlike ninjutsu, which changes the external world, genjutsu affects the victim's nervous system. The master channels their chakra into the flow of another's consciousness and replaces the signals of the senses: a person sees non-existent enemies, hears voices, feels pain from wounds that are not there.
The main danger is that the victim usually does not realize they are already inside an illusion. While they fight phantoms, the real opponent delivers the decisive blow. That is why even the strongest masters of ninjutsu died, never understanding that they had lost at the very beginning of the battle.
How to break an illusion
Genjutsu relies on someone else's chakra flowing in the victim's body. That means it can be broken by disrupting one's own chakra flow. There are three classic methods:
Genjutsu Kai — abruptly stop and then release your chakra again, breaking the other's rhythm.
Pain — acute pain brings one back to reality, so experienced shinobi injure themselves to break free.
Help from an ally — a comrade can pour their chakra into you and disrupt the induced illusion from outside.
Sensors — those who sense others' chakra — notice a trap most easily. But the Uchiha clan has a far more formidable tool.
Genjutsu and Sharingan
The most terrifying conductor of illusions is the eyes. Sharingan allows one to cast the most powerful genjutsu with just eye contact, and its advanced form, Mangekyō, unlocks techniques that are nearly impossible to resist. It was the eyes that made Itachi Uchiha the greatest master of illusions in history.
Catching a victim with a glance is almost a guaranteed victory: while they look into the Sharingan master's eyes, they have already lost.

Many have mastered illusions, but truly great masters are few.

The strongest genjutsu in the world
The pinnacle of illusion arts — techniques from which there is almost no escape.
Tsukuyomi — a world where the master fully controls time and space; for the victim, a second stretches into days of continuous torture.
Kotoamatsukami — perfect suggestion: the victim believes the imposed will is their own free choice.
Infinite Tsukuyomi — the ultimate goal of the era's villains: to plunge all of humanity into an eternal dream by reflecting the illusion from the Moon itself.
