In his youth, Nagato is a sensitive and anxious young man who finds it difficult to endure the suffering of those around him. He often cried as a child, and although under Yahiko's influence he tried to suppress this habit, his nature remained gentle. Jiraiya explained to him that the ability to feel others' pain is not a weakness, but a strength that allows one to be kinder, and Nagato took this teaching to heart. He dislikes killing and still remembers his first time when he had to take the life of an Iwa-nin protecting his friends.
He sincerely believes in Yahiko's ideals and sees his role as supporting his friend rather than being a leader. Nagato does not seek power and glory, although his Rinnegan already inspires awe in those around him. He ponders the nature of peace and how to end endless wars more than others, but has not yet developed his own path—he follows Yahiko, believing that his friend knows how to achieve peace.
At the same time, Nagato possesses inner strength that reveals itself in moments of extreme danger. When his friends' lives are threatened, he stops hesitating and acts with astonishing determination. He cherishes Konan and Yahiko deeply and is ready to do anything to protect them. In communication with outsiders he is reserved and taciturn, but with those close to him he can be open.
