Shimura Danzo is one of the most controversial figures of the Hidden Leaf: a veteran of three world wars, founder of the secret Root organization, and a man who betrayed an entire clan for the "good of the village." But most often people ask one thing: where did Danzo, not belonging to the Uchiha clan, get so many Sharingans? Let's break it down by the facts.

Who is Danzo Shimura

Danzo - a shinobi of Konoha from the era of the Second Hokage, a student of Senju Tobirama and a longtime rival of the Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi. All his life he adhered to a strict doctrine: the village is more important than morality, and peace rests on hidden power and fear.

For this idea, Danzo created and led Root (Ne) - an autonomous ANBU division that operated outside the law and answered only to him. Root's soldiers were taken as children, stripped of names and emotions, and turned into ideal tools. Formally, Root was disbanded; in reality, it operated for decades.

Danzo was not a villain in the usual sense. He sincerely considered himself a "shadow" taking on dirty work for the light of Konoha. The problem is that others paid the price for that shadow.

Where did Danzo get the Sharingan

Short answer: Danzo is not an Uchiha and does not have a drop of their blood. All his Sharingans are implants. He collected them from the eyes of deceased members of the Uchiha clan and implanted them into an artificial right arm, grown from the cells of the First Hokage. If you need an analysis of the dōjutsu itself, its levels and Mangekyō, see the separate guide to the Sharingan.

Arm from Hashirama's cells

The key to everything is Danzo's right hand. He allowed Orochimaru to conduct an experiment on him and implant into his arm the DNA of Senju Hashirama, the First Hokage. Hashirama's cells gave Danzo two things:

  • access to Mokuton (Wood Release) - a rare kekkei genkai of the Senju;

  • unique compatibility with others' eyes, due to which transplanted Sharingans were not rejected.

It was the First's cells that made possible what would kill an ordinary shinobi: a dozen foreign dōjutsu in one body.

Ten Sharingans on an arm

Ten Sharingans, taken from slain Uchiha, were implanted into Danzo's right arm. These eyes did not serve for vision - Danzo could not see through them nor use their passive abilities. They had one task: to fuel the forbidden technique Izanagi.

Izanagi: how Danzo "canceled" his death

Izanagi - a forbidden dōjutsu that briefly erases the boundary between illusion and reality: the user can rewrite what happened, including their own fatal wounds. The price is the eye, which goes blind forever after use.

For an ordinary Uchiha, Izanagi is only available for a few seconds and at the cost of one eye. Danzo, thanks to Hashirama's cells, stretched each use to about 60 seconds, and turned the ten eyes on his arm into "clips": one Sharingan closed - the next one activated. In total, this gave him up to ten minutes of near invulnerability in battle.

Shisui's Eye and Kotoamatsukami

A separate story - Danzo's right eye. It belonged to Uchiha Shisui, the possessor of the strongest genjutsu in the universe - Kotoamatsukami.

Kotoamatsukami allows controlling the victim's consciousness so that they do not even suspect the interference and consider the imposed thoughts to be their own free choice. Danzo stole the right eye from Shisui while he was still alive (Shisui entrusted the second to Itachi).

Normally, Kotoamatsukami cannot be used more than once every few days. But Hashirama's cells reduced the cooldown to several hours — and this made Danzo a deadly dangerous manipulator on the political arena.

Danzo and the Uchiha Clan Tragedy

Understanding Danzo's Sharingans is impossible without the main context: he was one of the architects of the Uchiha clan's destruction. Fearing a coup, Danzo bypassed the Hokage and made a deal with Itachi that he would wipe out his own clan in exchange for the safety of his younger brother, Sasuke.

It was precisely after this massacre that Danzo obtained the Uchiha eyes that settled in his arm. That is, his "collection" of Sharingans is a direct consequence of the tragedy he himself orchestrated. Behind the scenes of the entire intrigue stood Obito, but it was Danzo who gave the political sanction.

How Danzo died

After Itachi's confession and the revelation of the truth, Sasuke confronted Danzo directly. In their battle, Danzo kept reviving over and over using Izanagi, "burning" Sharingan after Sharingan. When the eyes on his arm ran out, his invulnerability also ended: Sasuke caught the moment between uses and finished him off. While dying, Danzo tried to take his enemy with him, but did not succeed.
