In his youth, Danzō was hot-tempered and jealous, constantly feeling overshadowed by Hiruzen Sarutobi and unwilling to rely on anyone. Over the years, he turned into an absolutely cold-blooded and calculating man who never let his emotions show. His main principle became the belief that the village's interests outweighed any morality, ethics, or personal attachments. For the prosperity of Konoha, he was ready to commit any villainy, including murder, blackmail, and manipulation, sincerely believing this path to be the only correct one. Danzō despised the soft-heartedness of previous Hokage and openly stated that it was precisely this that had led the village to ruin. He created Root, raising orphans as soulless tools, and put seals on their tongues so that no one would divulge his secrets. At the same time, he himself had a panic fear of death, hiding this fear behind arguments about the need to survive for the sake of the future of the entire shinobi world. Hypocrisy was his second nature: he preached self-sacrifice but avoided it himself for decades. He was envious and merciless toward rivals, which manifested in his attempt to kill Hiruzen using Root and in his willingness to destroy the Uchiha clan by someone else's hands. Even stealing Shisui's eye, a descendant of his former comrade, caused him no hesitation. In his final battle with Sasuke, he displayed extreme overconfidence, believing that only he could change the world, but was broken physically and morally. Before death, he finally admitted that he had never been able to match Hiruzen and wondered what he had been to his old friend. His only worthy act at the end was destroying Shisui's eye so it would not fall to the enemy, and attempting to take Sasuke and Tobi with him.
