Land of Lightning is located on a peninsula northeast of the Land of Fire and is one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries. Its territory is predominantly mountainous — extensive mountain ranges stretch across the entire country. Thanks to these mountains, the region is known for frequent thunderstorms, which gave the state its name. Numerous rivers flow from the mountains to the ocean, forming a jagged coastline with picturesque views. The country's territory also hosts numerous hot springs. The western border with the Land of Frost represents a vast desert area.

The main settlement and military center is Kumogakure — Hidden Cloud Village. It is situated high in the mountains and literally hidden in the clouds, which corresponds to its name. As one of the five great hidden villages, Kumogakure is governed by a Kage — Raikage. Over the village's history, five Raikage have succeeded one another. The village's architecture utilizes the natural terrain: buildings are constructed on mountain slopes and peaks, connected by bridges and passages.

In the mountains of the Land of Lightning lies the Valley of Clouds and Lightning — a water valley enveloped in fog or clouds. Inside this valley is a dark cave used by Killer B — the Eight-Tails jinchuriki — for training. This place is considered one of the village's key training zones.

A unique attraction of the country is the island turtle Gembu — a gigantic domesticated creature that, since the founding of Kumogakure, has served as a training base for shinobi. The turtle's size is so great that it can accommodate other large animals, as well as artificial and natural structures. In Kumogakure, it is considered an analogue of Konoha's Forest of Death.
