Yashamaru was an unusually warm, devoted, and caring person, for whom the most precious thing in life was his older sister Karura. He sincerely tried to understand his nephew Gaara and, unlike the other residents of Suna, did not feel fear or disgust towards him. Yashamaru believed that the sand protecting Gaara was a manifestation of Karura's maternal love, protecting her son even after death. He patiently taught the boy what love is and what pain is, trying not to let him become embittered. At the same time, deep down he hated the Fourth Kazekage, considering him guilty of his sister's death, since it was on his orders that Shukaku was sealed into the unborn Gaara. However, Yashamaru was a loyal soldier and the right hand of the Kazekage, therefore he unquestioningly obeyed the order. He staged a cruel betrayal before Gaara to test whether he was capable of controlling the tailed beast. His last words were filled with feigned hatred, while in reality he loved his nephew until the end. He was ready to give his life just to carry out the ruler's will and simultaneously teach Gaara a lesson. This duality made him a tragic figure, and the truth about his feelings was revealed only many years later.
