Chiyo is an old woman with a mischievous and willful temperament who loves to play tricks on those around her, especially by pretending to be dead or feigning senility. Behind this mask lies a veteran who has survived not just one war, with enormous experience and bitter wisdom. Years of retirement have made her indifferent to the fate of her native village — she believes the new generation must cope on its own, and genuine alliances between villages are impossible, especially in difficult times. She is pessimistic and often underestimates outsiders, for example, she expected only weak medics from Konoha. Yet deep inside her lives a profound regret over many actions: she blames herself for having sealed the One-Tail inside Gaara, and she suffers from being unable to protect her grandson Sasori from darkness. Upon meeting Team 7, her views begin to change: she develops respect for Sakura (despite the fact that she is a pupil of her old rival Tsunade) and sees in Naruto something capable of changing the shinobi world for the better. Love for her grandson remains her main driving force — for his sake she agrees to return to service, and in the end she sacrifices herself to revive Gaara as atonement. Even as she dies, she retains her sense of humor and asks Naruto to take care of the one who shared his pain of loneliness.
