Izanami is one of the highest dōjutsu of the Uchiha clan. It is a genjutsu that cannot be undone, even with the help of Izanagi. The technique works through the physical sensations that the user and the target experience simultaneously. As with Izanagi, the price of its use is complete and irreversible blindness of the eye with which Izanami was applied. According to Itachi, Izanagi alters destiny, while Izanami controls it.
To activate it, the user, using the Sharingan, memorizes, like a photograph, the physical sensations of his body and the opponent's body at an arbitrary moment (conventionally A). Then he deliberately reproduces those same sensations and memorizes that moment again (A'). Izanami superimposes and connects these two identical sensations and the stretch of time between them, creating an endless loop of events in which the target's consciousness gets stuck. Several different sensations (B, C, and so on) can be memorized, and upon activation they will all be repeated; the more sensations are memorized, the higher the chance of catching the target and the more events it will experience in each cycle.
Under the effect of Izanami, the target stands motionless, and the loop of events endlessly scrolls through its consciousness. Any damage received in the loop is reset with the start of a new cycle, although parts of severed body parts do not disappear. The illusory opponents adapt to the victim's attempts to change the course of events, not allowing it to escape. The only way to free oneself is to realize the real consequences of one's actions and accept one's fate: the technique was created precisely to bring to reason those who abused Izanagi, escaping from undesirable results. Because of the built-in way out of Izanami and the dangers of its use, it was considered dangerous in real combat and classified as a kinjutsu. Ironically, this genjutsu is applied not to enemies, but to allies who have strayed from the path, in order to help them find themselves.
