The Hyuga Clan is one of the most ancient and powerful clans in the history of the Hidden Leaf Village of Konoha. The history of this family is closely intertwined with legends about the origin of jutsu, dating back to times preceding the founding of the Five Great Hidden Villages.
The origin of the Byakugan, the unique kekkei genkai of the Hyuga clan, is shrouded in mystery. According to ancient legends, this technique is linked to the ocular abilities of the Otsutsuki clan—a powerful race that came to the human world from other dimensions. The White Eye, granting nearly 360-degree field of vision and the ability to see an opponent's chakra, became both the pride and the curse of the clan.
Since the founding of Konohagakure, the Hyuga Clan has held a place among the four noble clans of the village, alongside the Senju, Uchiha, and other influential families. Their combat potential and unique fighting styles—Gentle Fist and Rotation—made them valuable allies, but also objects of envy among other hidden villages.
One of the most tragic and defining events in the clan's history was the division into the Main Branch (宗家, Sōke) and the Branch Family (分家, Bunke). This split was intended as a measure to protect the secrets of the Byakugan—members of the Main Branch were guarded as heirs of the clan's true power, while the Branch Family served as their shield. Members of the branch family received the Caged Bird Seal (籠の手, Kagome no Te) on their third birthday, which restricted their power and allowed the Main Branch to control their actions until death.
Tragedy reached its peak in the events related to Kumogakure. After the end of the Third Shinobi World War, ninja from the Village Hidden in the Clouds attempted to kidnap Hinata Hyuga, heiress of the Main Branch, to obtain the secrets of the Byakugan. Her father, Hiashi, saved his daughter by killing the kidnapper, but this led to a diplomatic conflict. The Cloud Village demanded the extradition of Hiashi as a murderer, and ultimately his twin brother, Hizashi—father of Neji and a member of the Branch Family—was sacrificed. According to the agreement between the villages, Hizashi gave his life to protect the clan's honor and prevent bloodshed, although he carried hatred for the system that divided his family until his last breath.
These events deeply traumatized the young Neji Hyuga, who saw in them confirmation of his "fate"—to be an eternal servant of the Main Branch. However, his meeting with Naruto Uzumaki during the Chunin Exams fundamentally changed his worldview. Gradually, the wall between the branches began to crumble, especially after Hinata and Neiji developed mutual understanding.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Neji Hyuga gave his life protecting Hinata and Naruto, thereby finally breaking the chain of hatred between the branches. His death became a symbol of the end of the era of the curse and foretold changes in the clan's structure.
In the modern era, the Hyuga Clan remains one of the most influential in Konohagakure. Under the leadership of Hiashi Hyuga, significant changes have occurred in the relations between the branches—the rigid system is gradually softening, and traditions are adapting to the new realities of the shinobi world. The birth of offspring from the marriage of Hinata Hyuga and Naruto Uzumaki—Boruto and Himawari—also opened a new chapter in the clan's history, linking the ancient Hyuga bloodline with the legacy of Ashura and the powerful chakra of the Uzumaki.
