As a former member of Anbu, he takes orders very seriously and insists on being addressed by his current code name. He has a dry sense of humor and does not shy away from "manipulating fear"—his infamous "creepy face with empty eyes" terrifies Naruto, who even begins to speak politely. Despite his outward sternness, Yamato is not devoid of kindness and care for his comrades, especially Naruto, whose Nine-Tails power he helps suppress. He possesses high work capacity, but due to this, he is often overloaded with work, particularly when it comes to restoring the village using the Wood Release. Yamato loves architecture, and his hobby is reading books about construction, which he enjoys combining with building wooden houses for lodging.
