In his youth, Hiruzen already firmly believes in the "Will of Fire" — that Konoha is a family which the Hokage is obligated to protect at any cost. He is calm, reasonable, and kind, but unlike his elderly years, he displays more determination and assertiveness. He is called the "God of Shinobi" and the "Professor" for his incredible knowledge of techniques and tactical intuition. Hiruzen is very patient with his students and sees Orochimaru as a successor whom he tries to guide toward the path of good. He is not averse to weaknesses: he likes to joke, sometimes peeks at women (which connects him to Jiraiya), and smokes a pipe. However, in battle he is cold-blooded and deadly. He possesses charisma and is capable of leading troops, having earned respect even from enemy Kage. His main motivation is the protection of the village and future generations, and he does not hesitate when a difficult decision must be made. Despite his youth, he has already faced losses and betrayal, but did not become embittered — only wiser.
