Shikamaru is a genius lazybones. His IQ exceeds 200, but his academic grades were low solely due to his unwillingness to exert effort. Asuma, his teacher, discovered his intelligence through games and puzzles—the only way to engage the student. Shikamaru constantly complains about the "troublesomeness" of any task, dreams of a carefree life, cloud-watching, and doing nothing. However, it is precisely his innate sense of responsibility and loyalty to friends that compels him to take on leadership, even if he does not want to. He is willing to sacrifice himself for his comrades, which repeatedly manifests during exams and missions. He cannot stand losing to women (due to experience with his mother and Ino), but gradually learns to accept help. His worldview in Part I is still forming: he is skeptical, pragmatic, yet already absorbing the "Will of Fire" through Asuma's teachings. After the failure of the mission to retrieve Sasuke, he begins to doubt his leadership qualities, but this only spurs him on to further growth.
