Shikamaru is a genius lazybones. His IQ exceeds 200, but his academic grades were low solely due to his unwillingness to exert effort. Asuma, his teacher, discovered his intelligence through games and puzzles—the only way to engage the student. Shikamaru constantly complains about the "troublesomeness" of any task, dreams of a carefree life, cloud-watching, and doing nothing. However, it is precisely his innate sense of responsibility and loyalty to friends that compels him to take on leadership, even if he does not want to. He is willing to sacrifice himself for his comrades, which repeatedly manifests during exams and missions. He cannot stand losing to women (due to experience with his mother and Ino), but gradually learns to accept help. His worldview in Part I is still forming: he is skeptical, pragmatic, yet already absorbing the "Will of Fire" through Asuma's teachings. After the failure of the mission to retrieve Sasuke, he begins to doubt his leadership qualities, but this only spurs him on to further growth.

The foundation of Shikamaru's fighting style is the shadow techniques of the Nara clan. The main one is the Shadow Imitation technique, which he mastered even before entering the Academy. By connecting his shadow with the shadow of his opponent, he forces the victim to repeat his movements, completely immobilizing her or restricting freedom of action. To activate the technique, he must perform a certain sequence of hand seals, and the shadow itself can only act on flat surfaces. In battle, he uses it not only for capture, but also for manipulating the position of the opponent, forcing him to move to the desired place. During the Chunin exams, he demonstrated the ability to change the shape of the shadow to conduct it unnoticed under the cover of foreign objects. In the mission to return Sasuke, he applied the technique both for holding opponents and for creating traps.
