Shikaku — calm, composed and a bit lazy head of the Nara clan, who, like his son, often says 'what a hassle' and likes to have a drink of sake. However, behind this outward relaxation lies an iron will and incredible reliability. He is patient and wise, does not pressure his son, but on the contrary — encourages him to follow his convictions (and was one of the few parents who did not forbid Shikamaru to befriend Naruto). In battle Shikaku is merciless — during Orochimaru's invasion he mercilessly choked enemy shinobi without hesitation, even when they begged for mercy. He has an excellent sense of humor, likes to tease old friends (for example, Inoichi for having a daughter). Although his wife 'keeps him under the thumb', he has kept several stashes that she does not know about. Shikaku deeply cares for his son: after Asuma's death he comforted Shikamaru, helped him cope with grief and directed him onto the path of revenge, and then lost to him in shogi to cheer him up. In war he maintains composure even in the face of imminent death and, to the very last second, fulfills his duty as a strategist.
