Neji is a cold, serious, and arrogant genius who firmly believes that a person's fate is predetermined at birth and cannot be changed. He considers himself an exception—a born genius—but at the same time limited by his position in the branch house of the Hyuga, which condemns him to eternal service to the main house. This fatalistic philosophy makes him cruel and ruthless toward those he deems 'weak' or attempting to overcome their natural limitations. He openly mocks the dreams and efforts of others, confident they will inevitably fail. Deep down, Neji suffers from anger toward the main house, which he blames for his father's death, and from his inability to change his situation. His sarcasm is a defensive reaction. After his defeat by Naruto, who refused to accept predetermination, and after learning the truth that his father chose his own death for his brother's sake, Neji reconsiders his views. He realizes that fate is something a person chooses for themselves, and decides to become stronger so that he never loses again.
