Jiraiya is a complex and contradictory personality, combining lightness and depth, frivolity and wisdom.
At first glance he appears as a cheerful joker and a frivolous person who never misses a chance to peep at bathing girls, often gets into awkward situations because of his escapades in brothels, and loves to poke fun at those around him. This mask of a carefree reveler, which he wears with pleasure, serves him as protection from the weight of the losses he has endured and the responsibility lying on his shoulders.
Yet behind this outward simplicity hides an exceptionally wise and perceptive person. Jiraiya is a thinker and a philosopher, which is reflected in his books, especially in the series "The Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Ninja." He reflects deeply on the nature of the world, fate, peace and war. His travels around the world endowed him with a unique understanding of different cultures and peoples, making him one of the few shinobi with a truly global outlook.
As a mentor, Jiraiya shows himself at his best. He sincerely cares about his students — he treats Naruto like his own grandson, passing on to him not only techniques but also a philosophy of life. His teaching always combines strictness with care, he knows how to find an approach to each one, seeing potential where others see only flaws. At the same time, he suffers from a sense of guilt before his past students — he experiences Orochimaru's "fall" and Nagato's tragedy as his own failures.
In critical moments the frivolous mask falls away, revealing the determination and composure of a true legendary shinobi. He is capable of making hard decisions for the greater good, without hesitating to risk his own life. His courage is combined with pragmatism — he understands that some sacrifices are inevitable.
Deep down, Jiraiya is a romantic who believes in the prophecy about a child who will change the world. This faith gives him the strength to continue his path despite disappointments and losses. He is prone to self-criticism and periodically considers himself a failure, which, however, does not prevent him from rising again and again to defend the world and those he loves.
Jiraiya is one of the strongest ninjutsu specialists of his time. He has perfect mastery of the Fire and Earth elements, combining them to create large-scale destructive techniques: "Fireball," "Fire Dragon," "Oil Technique" (which he combines with fire for gigantic fires). He is the creator of some versions of the Rasengan — a technique of the highest level of chakra control, which he uses as his primary melee weapon. His summoning of toads (Gamabunta, Gamaken, Gamahiro) is considered exemplary: he can summon them without preparation, control them in battle, and use fusion (for example, the "Toad Stomach" technique to isolate opponents). He also possesses the "Wild Lion's Mane" technique, turning his hair into needles for mass damage. His arsenal includes sealing techniques of the "Flame Seal" level, capable of restraining tailed beasts. In battle he relies on powerful long-range attacks and summons, using Rasengan less often, as he prefers to keep his distance.
