In the first part, Choji is a good-natured but extremely sensitive teenager, painfully reacting to jokes about his weight. Any word 'fatty' or 'fatso' instantly enrages him, turning him into a furious fighter ready to declare war. Behind this outward irascibility lies deep insecurity: he often doubts himself, wants to avoid battle, but loyalty to friends outweighs fear. Choji values Shikamaru as his best friend, ready to do much for him, even if he initially refuses. He sincerely believes in simple principles: the last chip is sacred, one must not insult comrades, and for food and friendship one must fight to the death. In battle he is not a strategist but an emotional fighter, yet precisely emotions are his main strength. Asuma sees in him kindness that makes him potentially stronger than any aggressive ninja. Choji learns to accept himself through team support, but still often hides embarrassment behind false bravado or, conversely, timidity.
